Colisión y Momento (Collision & Momentum) is a rhythmic study that focuses on pulsed rhythmic processes that accumulate energy over time and subsequently release it in various collisions. I was interested in looking not only at the energy contained in a given rhythm but more so at the build up of tension (momentum) through periodic an aperiodic repetition. Typically, the listener will hear a rhythmic pattern -with one, two or three strong pulses contained within- repeat a few times perhaps increasing in loudness as its gathers momentum. As the pattern repeats, its harmonic, melodic or rhythmic content may change without altering the perception of momentum. Eventually, the rhythms that built up momentum collide with new rhythms containing pulses of different speeds, tempi and energy. This juxtapositions are written to suggest to the listener the experience and sensation of a physical impact. These collisions diffuse and release the energy built up over a period of time. From the rhythmic ‘ashes’ of these collisions new patterns emerge which once again begin to gather momentum starting a new cycle. The piece mirrors to some extent- the way in which physical objects in motion accumulate momentum and energy and release it after a sudden collision with stationary or moving objects. The actual sound produced by some of these physical processes has influenced they way I have structured and orchestrated the piece. Colisión y Momento was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture (Commande de l'Etat) for the ensemble Alternance. Premiere: March 10, 2005, salle Cortot, Paris. |
